I enjoyed this book as a child and we actually have 2 copies on our bookshelf now (board book and hardcover). It's fun to read because of all the different characters, especially the "snort".
We have been lucky enough to have 2 families born and raised right here in our own yard. Two years ago, a woodpecker made this hole on the right (and many more since). We watched both parents care for the babies until they went out on their own. This year, another bird moved in. We didn't know they were there until we heard the squeaking noises coming from the tree. It's above my head, so I can't get a good look in the hole, and I don't want to close and disturb them. Bethany and I would see them often during the day, once we were even lucky enough to see the mother feeding the baby beak-to-beak.
Now here's the problem. I'm assuming it's not good to have woodpecker holes all over your tree. The back side of this tree is covered. We love having the tree in the front yard - it adds to our curbside appeal and gives us lots of shade. How do we keep them from destroying our tree? We hear them often. We actually have many different types of birds in our yard. Sometimes it's a bit much. Daytime. Nighttime. And, have you ever heard a woodpecker on vinyl siding? Or had a bird fly into your sliding glass door? (no, my glass really isn't that clean) We even had one that flew into the back door so hard, we had to lay it to rest. :(

My parents have lots of birds too - some house finches that like to lay eggs on the wreath of their front door. A bit inconvenient but they are cute to watch. We went to the Wild Bird store and got my dad a Finch house and put the flowers from the wreath that they like all over it and hung it close to the door with hopes of slowly moving it around the front of the house - anyway, when we were there they had woodpecker houses too. You just have to figure out how to get them to hopefully use it! We had Woodpeckers that pecked our house in MD growing up. ANNOYING!
